Chances are if you are a leader you are already labeled - as a micromanager or inspiring. Very few leaders I know like to be regarded as a micromanager. Most of them would tell me they somehow slipped into it or were forced into this micro-managing position by external factors. And that its not their trait, or their leadership style. Would you agree?
Looking closer you will appreciate that micro-management is definitely the lack of having and sharing ‘The Big Picture’ of moving parts and possibilities, top-down. In the absence of a system which circulates this view as a method and aligns the actions of the larger organization to it as a goal, the ‘micromanaging’ ensues. Not entirely the Leader’s doing, or is it? You will also find that such a system of ambiguity or ‘save the day’ is a conscious cultural choice in some cases. The ‘need-to-know-basis’ culture of power and power distance becomes the operating principle. Some leaders intend it. It is a very subtle way of managing the movements with a greater sense of control over the many parts of business-as-usual. And in some cases you can find a very compelling logic to do so. So how does one go about fixing it? Where does one start?
Building a system around a business opportunity is by far the most time consuming critical tasks for a leader and that of brand strategy. Brand Guidelines is just the tip of this iceberg. Building the System needs commitment. It is a long path to walk together with the Leader, before it becomes ‘Culture’. Brand Strategy is a method of coding culture, embedding certainty and identity, as we go about our daily business. And for some reason if the path isn’t completed, one can very well imagine the results - not optimal and new kind of problems emerge, sucking the system back to micro-management.
